Project of a small residential house Project of a smallA cardboard home seems unthinkable. However, we have seen some of the world's most renowned architects and designers using the material to build massive structures, disaster relief housing, and even bridges. Dutch design studio Fiction Factory has unveiled a micro-home made from multi-layered cardboard that is said to last up to 100 years. The main space can serve as a workspace…… and a dining areaAn idyll of country life The so-called Wikkelhouse (literally “house made of wrapping paper”) is made from durable corrugated cardboard, assembled using environmentally friendly glue. The main material for constructionThe multi-layer nature of the cardboard ensures itsStrength Multi-layered cardboard layers are wrapped 24 times around one of the modular housing segments using a large rotating mechanism. This method results in a strong and insulated assembly.Wrapping process Then this module is 1 thick.2 m and weighing 500 kg, it can be combined with other modules to form a larger structure, eliminating the need for a monolithic base. The modular design provides scalability, flexibility in storage and transportation, ease of assembly and adaptation to individual project features. Each module has compact dimensionsOnce the modules are transported to the site, assembly takes just one to two days. The cardboard is covered with a waterproof and breathable Miotex film and lined with pine planks. According to the company, Wikkelhouse can last for decades (the protective film needs to be replaced every 30 years). However, the modules can be moved anywhere for reuse, and they are recyclable.Pine gives the home an elegant and classic lookappearance Windows can be placed anywhere. The kitchen, bathroom and shower are built in as “smart home segments”. Inside the house, the walls are covered with plywood, which gives the interior a minimalist, but natural warm look. The small round window fits perfectly into the overall design.Nothing extraThe elegance of minimalismJust like the good old daysA modern version of a cabin in the woods Each modulecosts around $4,500, while the full version of the basic Wikkelhouse is expected to cost around $80,000. The company is currently working on a stand-alone version. A spokesperson says: “Cardboard is an incredibly underrated material. No other building material is as lightweight, strong, and insulating. Most people think of cardboard as something that’s only good for boxes. No one believes in building a house out of cardboard. But it’s possible to build a beautiful home out of it. We’re just not used to it yet.” The Wikkelhouse isn’t just an intriguing modern micro-home design, it’s also a fun new way to transform simple cardboard into a strong, insulating material. Would you live in one?
