Cleaning of walls from old plaster
You will need:
- hammer and chisel;
- putty knife;
- perforator;
- garbage bags;
- glasses and respirator;
- spray.
The first thing to do is to determine whether it is necessarywhether to get rid of the old plaster or not. The wall is checked by tapping. If you find a dull sound (in many places), it means that the plaster is not holding firmly, and it is better to remove it. If there are cracks on the wall, this is a clear sign of poor quality finishing. It is also necessary to get rid of the old coating if the wall has large differences. Since it is much more difficult to level out the unevenness than to plaster the wall again.
Scheme for removing old plaster.You can clean the wall from plaster using a hammer and chisel. This is quite a dusty job, so the surface must be thoroughly wetted with water. Then set the chisel at a slight angle and hit it with a hammer. This way, the pieces of plaster will easily break off. It is important not to damage the electrical wiring. If you do not know where it is, it is better to unscrew the plugs for the duration of the work. There are cases when the plaster is so firmly attached that it is impossible to cope with it using a chisel and hammer. Then it is better to use a hammer drill, on which a chisel attachment is installed and switched to the chiselling mode. At the same time, do not forget about safety precautions: put on a respirator, safety glasses and gloves. Set the hammer drill at an angle, start chipping off pieces of plaster, while constantly moistening the resulting chips with a spray bottle. If the plaster contains a large amount of cement, it is quite difficult to remove it even with a hammer drill. In this case, you will need a grinder with a stone cutting attachment, with its help the plaster is cut lengthwise and crosswise (in the form of a rectangle or square), after which it will be easy to chip it off with a hammer drill. Do not forget to immediately put the garbage in bags - then you will not have to clean the floors and waste valuable time on additional cleaning. You can also clean the walls from plaster using a layer-by-layer method (suitable only for a thin layer of finishing). First, moisten the surface very well, then sand it with an abrasive bar soaked in water (easily replaced with sandpaper and a grater). This method is not very convenient, since you have to constantly wash the surface of the bar or replace the sandpaper. The task is much easier if you have a grinding machine with an abrasive disk in the house, with its help it is very easy to clean the wall from the old coating. But this is a rather dusty method, so the plaster will have to be constantly moistened. You can also clean the wall with a spatula, but only if the coating is loose and not very strong. This is a fairly labor-intensive process that requires considerable effort and time. Therefore, experts advise using it only as a last resort. Taking into account the recommendations outlined above, you can easily clean the walls from plaster and cope with the task.
