Paint removal works
The first step in window restoration isRemoving paint, sealant and putty from the entire surface of the frame. The next step is to remove old paint from the entire surface of the window, putty in places where the glass is installed, sealing and thickening elements, i.e. the wooden frame of the window must be completely cleaned of any coatings. The most labor-intensive process is removing old paint. Paint is removed in three ways: mechanical, chemical and thermal. The mechanical method involves removing a layer of the old coating with a spatula, knife, chisel and sandpaper. Paint is scraped off flat surfaces with a spatula. A knife and chisel can be used in the corners of the profiles. The remains of the paint layer are cleaned with sandpaper or abrasive paper. The chemical method involves the use of solvents. Treatment with an alkaline solution has proven effective. In this case, the entire surface is treated with an alkaline composition, and after 15 minutes, when the paint layer comes off the wood, the paint is easily removed with a spatula. The thermal method uses a building hair dryer. A stream of hot air is directed at the window frame, and the paint is removed with the other hand using a spatula. How to replace the glass?
Scheme of inserting glass into a wooden frame.The next stage of DIY window repair begins with sanding the entire surface of the window. Then the surface is thoroughly wiped and cleaned of dust. All wooden elements should be impregnated with an antiseptic composition, both on the outside and on the inside. At home, it is best to impregnate with drying oil. It should be heated (preferably up to 130 ° C) and rubbed into the wood with a brush. The procedure should be repeated 3-4 times. After the wood has dried, the glass is installed. Glass with even the slightest cracks should be replaced with new ones. If the old sheets are in perfect condition, they are well cleaned, washed and installed again. The places where the glass is installed are covered with an adhesive composition. Silicone glue can be used. The glass sheets are inserted into their grooves over the undried glue. The gap between the frame and the glass is smeared with putty or paint. You can use ready-made or homemade putty (for example, a mixture of silicone glue with chalk mixed with drying oil). The glass is pressed and secured with glazing beads using small nails. The places where the glazing beads are attached and the glass are cleaned of excess putty. Silicone glue is easily cleaned with a vinegar solution. The joint between the glazing bead and the frame is processed with sandpaper. After cleaning and sanding the surface, all irregularities and cracks are covered with two layers of filler. For the first layer of filler, a dry coarse-grained wood filler mixture is recommended, and for the second layer - a fine-grained finishing wood filler. After the filler has dried (about 12 hours), a primer is applied in two layers to the entire surface of the frame. It is better to use a deep penetration primer mixture. It is applied to the surface with a paint brush and is designed to improve the adhesion of paint and wood. It is recommended to paint windows with acrylic enamel using a paint brush. It is advisable to paint in two layers. The first layer must penetrate into the frame material, so it is applied by rubbing with a brush. The second layer is decorative and is applied in an even layer with light smooth movements along the timber. If unevenness of color is noticeable on the painted surface of the window, it is advisable to apply a third layer. After the paint has dried, hinges, latches and fittings are installed. For example, a gap has appeared between the frame and the window opening, and a draft penetrates the room. In this case, dismantling is not necessary. The area where the defect has appeared is cleaned of paint, plaster and putty, and also sanded. The gap is filled with putty. A strip of mounting plastic mesh is laid over the sealed gap (before the putty dries). A layer of finishing putty is applied until the surface is completely leveled. If the gap is wide enough, it is recommended to pre-fill it with insulation (mineral wool, felt, etc.). If the gap has appeared between the sash and the frame, the sash is removed from the hinge, the defect is eliminated. Most often, such a defect occurs in the corner of the sash due to poor sealing in the tenons of the profile joint. There may be two reasons: sagging hinges or deformation (swelling) of the wooden structure. If a hinge is found to be faulty, it must be dismantled and moved to another location. In this case, the recess in the previous location should be filled with putty, and the surface should be carefully leveled. If the cause of the defect is swelling of the wood, the sash must be removed from the hinges and the hinges unscrewed. Convex areas on the frame or sash (possibly on both elements) are removed with a plane. If defective areas cannot be detected visually, they can be found by marks on a paper strip if it is placed between the frame and the sash. Minor defects are removed with sandpaper. Correction of local defects

In this case, a small area of good wood around the defect should be grabbed so that there are no sources of future rotting. The walls of the resulting recess are treated with an antiseptic, and after drying, they are covered with an adhesive composition (epoxy or wood glue). If the cut out area is of significant size, it is recommended to fix a piece of wood in this place, similar in shape to the recess.
