How to arrange furniture in a room: symmetry and asymmetry

Stylish and harmonious interior - it's notonly a verified color scheme and carefully selected accessories. In order for the room to be beautiful, comfortable and cozy, it is necessary to provide for all the subtleties and, first of all, think about how the room is.Symmetrical arrangement of furnitureFigure 1.It is not difficult to arrange furniture symmetrically in a room, you need to choose the center of the composition and arrange paired items from it. This must be done at the stage of interior planning. This prudent step will allow you to correctly calculate the required number of sockets during the renovation and will insure against such unpleasant surprises as a door that does not open completely. You can make a furniture arrangement plan using special programs or the old-fashioned way, armed with a sheet of paper, tape measure and pencil. But this is already practice, and theory is much more interesting. Regardless of the interior of which room is being developed, it is worth focusing on one of the principles of furniture arrangement. All of them have been repeatedly worked out by professional designers and honed to the smallest detail.

Symmetry and only symmetry

Figure 2.Asymmetry deprives the space of rigid forms and frames, makes the interior free, individual and unique. Symmetrical arrangement of furniture is the simplest and almost win-win option. Its essence is simple: you need to choose a semantic center, also known as a focus, and place paired items around it. But not everything is so simple, without knowing the subtleties, instead of a pleasant to the eye comfortable interior you can get a cold and repulsive with its perfection frame from a fashion magazine. Symmetrical arrangement is suitable only for rooms of regular geometric shape. In complex rooms the charm will be lost. In order to correctly arrange furniture in a room symmetrically, you must first decide on the semantic center. In the bedroom it can be a bed, in the living room - a fireplace, in the dining room - a dining set. After the focal point is determined, you can gradually fill the space around it with paired interior items (Fig. 1). This method is good because the owners of the house do not have to resort to the services of decorators. But it is important to remember that several such corners of perfect symmetry are quite difficult to connect together. The most common and successful islands are:An interior with a fireplace is most often made symmetrical.

  • A fireplace with a pair of armchairs in front of him. A little smoothen symmetry can be a coffee table.
  • Bed with bedside tables.
  • Dining table, surrounded by 2 rows of chairs.
  • But there is no need to think that symmetry can beonly boring, the perfect match of furniture can be smoothed out with the help of color play. Thus, the chairs can be identical, but one of them can be decorated with a blanket casually thrown over the armrest or a bright pillow. In addition, many furniture manufacturers offer one model made in different colors, so why not experiment? Return to the table of contents</a>

    The charm of asymmetry

Asymmetry is more complex. It is necessary to have a fine sense of furniture, colors, and also to consider materials and textures. Otherwise, a stylish interior will resemble a pile of different-sized objects. A big plus of this method of arrangement is the absence of a reference to the shape and size of the room.Figure 3.The circular arrangement of furniture is suitable for living rooms, dining rooms or offices. In addition, there is no need to look for a “worthy pair” for your favorite chest of drawers or an original armchair. To implement the idea qualitatively, it is enough to understand how to arrange the furniture correctly and what subtleties to pay attention to (Fig. 2). First of all, you need to remember that the size of the object and the distance from it to the conditional focus should be in direct proportion. That is, the smaller the furniture or interior element, the closer it should be placed. For example, a window framed by original curtains is chosen as the focus. It was decided to install a sofa and a small coffee table near it. If both pieces of furniture are installed at the same distance, the harmony will be lost. It would be more logical to move the table closer to the window, and leave the sofa at some distance, complementing it with a flower in a massive tub. According to the same scheme, you need to select a place for the rest of the interior elements. And in this case, even a few centimeters will play a role. Do not be afraid to slightly move the furniture in the room again and again, looking for that very balance. But the asymmetrical arrangement of furniture has one not very pleasant feature. From different angles the room will look different, and it is important to find exactly such an arrangement that will look advantageous from the door, and from the window, and from any other position. Circle as a reference

Figure 4.In a modern bedroom, built-in wardrobes should be used so that they do not disrupt the overall look of the room. A circular arrangement is suitable for public rooms, such as a living room or dining room. It is difficult to arrange furniture in a room within an imaginary circle if the focal point is a massive bed or desk. The essence of this method is simple. It is necessary to find the actual or semantic center of the room and arrange the furniture around it. The focal point can be a massive chandelier, a striking carpet, a table or an original gas fireplace surrounded by glass on all sides. It is necessary to arrange the furniture around this accent. With the help of sofas and armchairs, you can literally create a perfect circle (Fig. 3). It is a little more difficult to cope with a circular scheme if you need to arrange furniture in a room of irregular shape or the interior provides for the presence of wardrobes and small details. In this case, you need to remember the rules of asymmetrical arrangement. Small objects should be moved closer to the center, and massive ones should be given a place closer to the wall. In addition, an imaginary circle can become one of the details of an asymmetrical arrangement. This move will help balance the proportions of an overly elongated room. The harmony of the interior will largely depend on the size of the room. Even knowing how to arrange furniture correctly, it is worth remembering that a sofa or a bookcase standing in the center of the room will visually reduce it. Return to contents</a>

    Ideas and useful tips

In the children's room it is necessary to provideplay, study, sleeping area and storage places for things, toys, books. But it often happens that the theoretical part is studied and understood, but with practice the matter is more complicated. The principles are clear, but the understanding of how to arrange the furniture correctly has not come. In this case, you can use one of the ready-made ideas. In a dining room of almost any size, you can use the circular arrangement method. The center can be a dining table of any size, and you can complement it with a recreation area. The living room as a room should be focused on the most comfortable placement of a group of people. In such a room, it is advisable to use a circular arrangement of furniture, where the actual center will be a coffee table, and sofas and armchairs will be located around it. And, of course, the focus should be visible from any point - the TV. If the dimensions allow, you can create several functional zones, but in this case it is necessary to carefully think through the details so that the parts of the room do not look too isolated. The bedroom is a room intended for quality rest, and the interior should be simple. When using a symmetrical arrangement method, it makes sense to rely on a massive bed and bedside tables. A chest of drawers or a dressing table can dilute the severity of the lines. And so that the wardrobe does not make adjustments to the design, it makes sense to install a built-in model, the doors of which will merge with the walls (Fig. 4). When decorating a child's room, you need to consider not only the aesthetic, but also the functional side. It is important to think about how to arrange the furniture in the room so that the child can play without the risk of injury. The optimal solution would be to place the bed and wardrobes along the walls, the center of the room should be free. When thinking about the interior of the kitchen, first of all, you need to focus on the size of the room. For modest rooms, placing furniture along the walls is suitable. In a spacious room, you can create a stylistic center, for example, install a massive table, the rest of the furniture will be located around it. In an effort to correctly arrange the furniture, one must not forget that the room should first of all be comfortable for the owners. And if a cozy, quiet family haven does not fit into generally accepted standards, you should not strive for alteration. It is better to consider that a unique style was invented within the confines of this house.
