Decorating a room with wallpaper is botha very responsible and exciting activity. How you feel will depend on how correctly the wallpaper is selected to match the overall style of the interior. After all, as has long been known, the color and material from which the wallpaper is made greatly affect both a person's health and his psychological and emotional background.

There are three main criteria in total: color, texture and functionality. Let's consider everything in more detail to make it easier for you to make a choice.
The rules of the combination by the criterion "color"
Criteria for combining finishes by color.This is the very first criterion that needs to be paid attention to. It is on it that the mood of the room and its visual increase or decrease depend. In the context of this criterion, the following rules should be highlighted.

Visualization of the size. For a light and large living room, you can combine light and dark colors boldly, without worrying that the room will decrease (Fig. 1). And the contrast can be the sharpest. In this case, curtains are an important part. For example, choosing black and white as the two primary colors, it's best to choose white curtains or a black pattern on them.
If your living room is medium or smallsize, it is best to avoid strong contrasts. It is desirable to use one color, choose a lighter shade as the main wallpaper, and as a supplement in some places, decorate the walls with a more saturated shade of the same color (Fig. 2). Curtains in this case can be made either one of the shades, or completely different in color. Only the curtains must necessarily at least slightly be combined with the room, for which it is obligatory in the room to be present such color eye-catching accessories.
It is very beautiful to distinguish with a calmer color fromabsent or minimal drawing of the zone of direct rest in the living room (near the chair with a shade, near the sofa), and wallpaper with a drawing (for example, it will look good large flowers in the living room) to cover the rest of the room.

As a rule, today's market sells a variety of different materials that differ in their texture quite noticeably. But not all of them are in harmony with each other. Therefore, it is also important to adhere to some rules.

The combination of silkscreen or plain paperThe wallpaper is always beautifully combined in the living room with natural cork coverings. And a small part of the room is trimmed off, and silkscreen is used as the main finishing material. Curtains can pick up any material.
Photo wallpapers go well with all textures.In this case, it is recommended to use photo wallpapers with some cheerful pattern for the living room - a night city, bright saturated nature. It is better to combine them with others that resemble a relief without bright patterns. But it is better to choose curtains for such wallpapers to match the color that prevails on the photo wallpaper. Or you can also hang curtains of some neutral intermediate shade, which will not be so noticeable.
If you want some parts of the walls in the roommake them visually protruding, then it is advisable to stick decorations with a strongly visible relief on them (Fig. 3). At the same time, it is better to paste over the rest of the room with perfectly smooth wallpaper. Such a play of textures will create a unique impression in the living room! The criterion of "functionality" when decorating a living room
The functionality criterion determines whichIt is better to visually highlight the zones in the living room. In this case, if everything is done correctly, the room will be divided into two or more functional zones, which will create the impression of several rooms in one room.

It will always be successful to detach the reception areawith a table from the quiet rest zone, where it is supposed to just read a book under a shade. At the same time, the reception area is covered with more vivid textured wallpaper (Figure 4), and the calm zone is decorated in low-key colors.
An excellent option is the alternation of tworolls of finishing of one type and texture with a slightly different pattern. In this case, one strip is glued through the other. This alternation must be done competently, so that near the strips of cleaner and quieter the furniture stood, while the brightest had its minimum amount. This is good for the interior of the living room.
