Ways of laying linoleum: calculation, preparation, consistency

There are a number of requirements for floor coveringsrequirements - strength, moisture resistance, thermal insulation, environmental friendliness, resistance to damage, availability and others. Linoleum is the best choice for these parameters, so this covering has earned recognition and trust among buyers.Layout of conductive linoleum in rollsScheme of laying conductive linoleum in rolls. It has received its wide distribution also because there are several methods, among which everyone can choose the one that suits them.

Calculation and preparation for laying

The order of laying linoleum. The construction market offers a wide selection of linoleum - from narrow to wide sheets, which makes it possible to select the material of the required size and cover the surface in one piece. If the geometry of the room is simple, then laying linoleum in one piece, without seams and pattern adjustment, will not be difficult. Experts advise giving preference to the seamless method of laying. To accurately determine how much linoleum you will need, you need to take measurements of the room. Carefully measure all the walls, paying attention to irregularities and recesses. Be sure to record the results on paper so as not to forget. You need to buy linoleum with a reserve of 5-15 cm from the measurements on all sides. In the case of laying the covering not in a single piece, you need to take into account the allowances for joints and pattern adjustment. When buying in a store, you must find out the shrinkage rate of the selected material. For example, linoleum on a foam backing stretches over time, and a felt backing of linoleum gives a significant shrinkage of the sheet. When all measurements and calculations are made, you can begin preparing the floor. Linoleum should be laid on a flat and clean surface. No dust, debris or crumbs are allowed on the floor. The thinner the sheet, the more thoroughly you need to clean the surface of the floor from small debris, since even a small speck of dirt can lead to the formation of cracks or abrasions in this place.Coverage calculation scheme. If the apartment has concrete floors, they are leveled with a special solution if necessary. Linoleum can be laid on such a floor only after it has completely dried. It is worth considering that concrete does not conduct heat well, so if the linoleum sheet does not have a heat-insulating layer, then before laying the material, you need to arrange a substrate of chipboard sheets. If the floor consists of boards, they need to be leveled, the gaps between them filled and checked for protruding nails. But you can do it easier - cover the floor with sheet material (plywood, fiberboard, etc.). All joints between the sheets need to be filled and sanded. Only after the measures have been taken to prepare the floor can you begin laying the linoleum. Before starting the laying work, you must first remove all furniture from the room that may interfere, and remove the baseboards. If linoleum installation is planned together with cosmetic repairs of the premises, then its installation should be carried out after all the work has been completed and the building solutions have completely dried. Only after careful preparation of the premises can you begin laying linoleum. Return to contents</a>

Ways of laying

Linoleum installation diagram. If the material has just been delivered, then you do not need to start laying it right away. The linoleum should lie in the room for 1-2 days to acquire the necessary plasticity. The room temperature for laying linoleum should not be lower than 18°C, otherwise the material will not lend itself to installation. There are the following methods for laying linoleum:

  • Dry flooring, without fastening to the floor. It is used when the area of the room does not exceed 20 sq.m and in rooms with low traffic (apartments). With this method of laying, the edges of the sheet are pressed with baseboards, which protects the linoleum from shifting. The installation technology using this method is very simple - the linoleum is loosely laid on the floor, leveled, excess is removed and secured with baseboards. The joints are glued with double-sided tape and hidden with an aluminum threshold.
  • Bonding linoleum to the base withdouble-sided scotch tape. This way of laying is similar to the previous one, only here the canvas is glued to the substrate with the help of double-sided scotch tape. Adhesive tape is glued along the entire perimeter of the room, and it is covered with linoleum. All joints, too, are carefully glued with scotch tape and closed. This method is suitable for impenetrable rooms of not more than 20 square meters.
  • Gluing linoleum with special glue. This method involves applying the adhesive to the entire sheet. It should be used in rooms with an area of over 20 square meters, in places with high traffic (hotels, hospitals) and if it is planned to lay not a single sheet, but individual pieces. For greater adhesion, the back side of the linoleum and the overlap are primed and left to dry for 1-2 days. After this period, you can start gluing. Basically, for gluing linoleum, they use "Bustilat", "Gumilax", etc., and if the sheet is on a textile base, then bitumen-synthetic adhesive mixtures are used. If the linoleum is without a base, then it is glued with mastic based on synthetic resins.
  • Fastening linoleum with the help of nails and staples. This method is used quite rarely, in spite of the high strength of the fastening of the web. Use this method of installation can be both on a wooden base and on the concrete floor. Only in the second case it is necessary to make holes for the dowels in advance, in which fixing screws will be screwed. This method is suitable not only if the entire floor is laid, but also for laying individual pieces of linoleum.
  • The installation method should be chosen depending onthe square footage of the room, the integrity of the canvas and your own capabilities. Remember that laying linoleum is not an easy task, so this work must be taken very seriously. Return to contents</a>

    Sequence of work on laying

Installation of linoleum floors.Correctly and qualitatively performed work on laying linoleum is not all that is needed to achieve the best result. In order to avoid a number of problems during installation, it is necessary to strictly follow the sequence of laying linoleum. On the prepared surface of the ceiling, it is necessary to spread the material so as to observe the correct direction of the pattern. Then the canvas is smoothed in the direction from the middle to the edges to remove all air pockets. The overlap of the canvas on the walls should be equal to 2-5 cm. All excess is cut off with a special sharp knife, for this you need to tightly apply a metal ruler to the joint of the floor and the wall and cut off the excess along the resulting fold. You do not need to worry about an uneven cut of linoleum near the walls - this error will be hidden by the baseboard. If the ceiling is concrete, then the linoleum should not reach the walls by 5-10 mm. And if the floor is wooden, then the edge of the sheet should hang down a little into the gap between the floor and the wall. This will prevent the edges of the linoleum from opening along the walls while it is laying. After finishing cutting the linoleum, it should be left to straighten out for 1-2 days. Then, depending on the chosen method of laying the linoleum, installation work is carried out. There will be no problems with dry laying and gluing with double-sided tape, but gluing the linoleum to the base with an adhesive solution will require some effort. To apply the adhesive, the sheet must be folded back and the glue applied to the base using a notched trowel. Depending on the desired thickness of the glue, the height of the trowel teeth is selected. The thickness of the dispersed adhesive composition should be 0.7 mm, synthetic - 0.4 mm and bitumen - 0.5 mm. When using synthetic adhesives, apply the glue to the back of the linoleum, let it sit for 15 minutes, and then lay the sheet. If bitumen adhesive is used, apply the glue to the base, let it sit for 10-20 minutes, and then lay the linoleum. No waiting time is required for other types of adhesives — you can immediately lower the sheet. Then smooth it out, removing air bubbles. Do the same with the other half of the linoleum, carefully treating all the joints. After 2 days from the moment of gluing, you can start installing the baseboards and thresholds. After this, the linoleum will be laid, then you can bring in the furniture and enjoy the result.
