Sofa cushions can become interior design elements if you choose their shape and color correctly.

Pillow original and unique

The sofa cushions have become a real embodimentcoziness and comfort (1). They can have a variety of shapes and be decorated with ruffles, frills, decorative cords, beads, ribbons, lace and other things. Synthetic padding, down, feathers, scraps or other suitable material can be used for stuffing. Even foam rubber can be used. It is especially suitable when a bolster is made to decorate the sofa. It is not recommended to use cotton wool. It will quickly bunch up, and the pillow will become uncomfortable. If you plan to use the pillow for rest, it should be comfortable. All decorations should be placed on the sides so that they do not press and do not interfere with rest. If the pillows will only act as decoration, then it is permissible to place hard elements on the entire surface (2).Figure 2.If the pillows are intended solely for decoration, they can have a rigid base. There are no restrictions on the choice of fabric for making pillows. It is important that it is easy to work with and matches the overall style of the room. Linen, cotton, canvas, knitted fabric, as well as denim, felt and fleece are often used. You can choose furniture fabric and even use the remains of old clothes. You can also knit or crochet a pillowcase. Such a thing will look especially stylish and interesting. It is permissible to combine fabrics, making different compositions. In this case, it is better to choose a material similar in texture so that the finished thing does not turn out shapeless. However, it is worth noting that simply sewing a pillow is only half the battle. In order for it to become a real decoration of the sofa, it itself must be properly decorated. At this stage of the work, you can let your imagination fly freely, because it is simply impossible to list all the examples of decoration. The most popular decoration is accessories: ribbons, beads, buckles, cords, braid and other elements. The pillow can be decorated with applique or three-dimensional figures made of fabric. You can use textile paints, embroidery, decorative stitches and other techniques. Return to contents</a>

Even an inexperienced craftswoman can make cushions for a sofa with her own hands. You just need to use your imagination, prepare the necessary materials and tools. For work you will need:

  • The cloth.
  • Material for packing.
  • Sewing machine.
  • Ruler.
  • A chalk or a pencil to carry out the marking on the fabric.
  • Sewn centimeter.
  • Scissors, threads, pins, needles.
  • Figure 3. Pattern of a round pillow for a sofa. Before you start working, you need to decide on the size of the future pillow. For example, it will be a square model measuring 50x50 cm. The fabric is laid out on a flat surface, and on the back side, squares with a side of 50 cm plus 2 cm for seams on each side are marked. Apply the markings using a ruler and chalk. Cut out the resulting blanks with scissors. Then fold them “face to face” and pin them along the marking line, placing them perpendicular to the seam. Thanks to this, the fabric will not shift. Now the prepared parts can be stitched on a machine. It is necessary to retreat from the edge of 2 cm, which were left for this purpose. Three sides of the future pillow are completely stitched, and a small hole must be left on the fourth. Stuffing will be done through it. The finished pillowcase is turned right side out and stuffed with the selected filler. The edges of the stuffing hole are folded inward, and it is sewn up by hand. The pillow is ready. We sew a cover with a fringing

First of all, you need to choose the fabric. It should match the design of the sofa and the entire room. The fabric is laid out on a flat surface with the wrong side up and marked, for example, a 50x50 cm square. Add 3 cm on all sides so that you can easily put the cover on later, and 2 cm for the seams. The result should be a square with a side of 55 cm. The cover is made removable, so the back needs to be cut longer. To do this, add 30 cm to one of the sides. Thus, the back pattern will have a size of 55x85 cm. The resulting blanks are cut out. Next, the back blank is folded in the middle and cut along the fold line. The cut is hemmed by 2-3 cm. The cut parts are superimposed on each other so that the blanks for the back and the face become the same size. The hemmed cuts must be sewn on a sewing machine, 10 cm on each side. The back parts are connected so that there is a hole for putting it on the pillow (3). Next, you should fold the upper and lower parts of the cover with the right side inward and pin them together. If desired, the corners can be made semicircular. A clothesline cord can be used as an edging, which is placed in the fabric folded into a strip. Then it should be placed between the parts of the cover along the entire perimeter. The edges should be carefully adjusted. The fabric and cord are pinned together. For ease of work, this should be done at least every 5-7 cm. The prepared workpiece is stitched on a machine. The pins are removed and the seam is processed with a zigzag. The finished cover should be turned right side out and ironed. Several covers can be sewn for pillows. By changing them, you can change the mood in the room every time.
