House designed by Kyiv designer Sergei Makhno –an excellent example of the unity of form and function. The modern building, integrated into the landscape, forms an organic continuum, distinguished by its environmental friendliness and ultimate functionality. This time, for the house of the week, we chose the project of the Kyiv designer and architect Sergey Makhno. It attracted us not only by its simplicity of execution and environmental friendliness, but also by its compactness, where everything necessary fits into a relatively small area. Moreover, most of the furniture and decor items are Sergey’s own design, and the house is also home to a cheerful, cute guest — the owner’s dog named Jack, who gave the project its name. Sergey Makhno, designer, architect, project manager In 2003, Sergey founded his own workshop. At that time, he worked in it alone, and now he has a large, talented team. “Even the simplest ideas can be radically transformed in the course of life. 15 years ago I dreamed of being a graffiti artist, and today we have already celebrated the 10th anniversary of the architectural studio, without which I can no longer imagine myself. My aspiration is to move along my own trajectory, so that each of our steps has a different form, and each thing we create is not a wrapper, but a new universe,” says Sergey.

Layout features and materials
The interior zoning is implemented quite welltraditional: the ground floor is allocated for the public spaces of the hall, living room and kitchen with a dining area, while the second floor is reserved for private rooms, including 2 bedrooms, a bathroom and a library. The avant-garde solution for the interior space of the house is characterized by an exquisite design gesture - the use of open architectural materials in the interior: traditional concrete, tinted aerated concrete, metal. However, this does not contradict the classical understanding of beauty, embodied in the standard set by Alberti. He said that beauty is a certain agreement and consonance of parts in what they are parts of. Here, this consonance is achieved by a virtuoso mixture of textures, the ability of the author of the project to combine various materials with the grace of an artist and emphasize the natural beauty of even those that are usually hidden. Vertical wooden beams made of pine decorate the aerated concrete walls of the living room, and the bedroom is completely covered with pine boards. The floors are covered everywhere except in the bathrooms, also made of pine, which, according to Sergey, is stylish and economical. Traditional finishing materials are used only in the bathrooms, which are tiled.
About design and furniture
Naturalness and ease of the interioris emphasized by the free interpretation of the interior spaces, not overloaded with furniture and decorative filling. Most of the furnishings were made exclusively for this project according to the author's designs of Sergey Makhno. For example, the fireplace, the shelf at the entrance, the high table, the shelving cabinet and the table in the kitchen, as well as the kitchen itself, were all made to order by Ukrainian craftsmen. And carefully selected decorative elements, also created according to designer sketches, allow you to perceive the interior space of the house as lived in and having its own history.
About Jack
The project was named after the owner's funny, nimble dogmansion. Apparently, Jack liked the openness of the interior of this house: during walks on the property, he enjoys watching both the owner and his guests through the panoramic window.Sergey Makhno, designer:"This is an economical and environmentally friendly project that embodies a number of current trends. There is nothing superfluous here. A relatively small area and a modest budget set up a functional and at the same time emotional approach. Almost all the furniture was made to order in Ukraine. A lot of wood was used, since the owner really loves warm colors and natural materials. Perhaps the most important thing in this house is the embodiment of both simplicity and style. As in the famous phrase "Everything ingenious is simple." Architectural studio of Sergey Makhno http://mahno.com.ua Photo: Andrey Avdeenko
