Notes of the designer

Elbphilharmonie opens in Germany – etk-fashion.com

In 2007, the Hamburg city parliament approvedproject to create a new philharmonic hall. And now its construction is complete - on January 11, it celebrated its official opening with two concerts by the NDR Symphony Orchestra. The designer bathroom manufacturer Duravit supplied the building with its washbasins. The Elbphilharmonie is not only a concert hallhall. It marked the beginning of something new in the Hamburg port. The building stands out from the rest, but at the same time it remains in harmony with its surroundings. Thanks to the combination of shapes and colours it looks very attractive, mainly due to the undulating roof, which gives a sense of movement to the clear outline of the façade and consists of glass rectangles arranged in a row.Architects from the Basel-based firm Herzog & deMeuron chose the renovation of the historic Kaispeicher warehouse, built in the 1960s, as their main concept. The red brick base and shimmering white superstructure create a contrast in the architecture of the Elbphilharmonie – a heavy, massive lower part and a wave-like top. When approached from the west, the building appears graceful, almost fragile, and despite its height of 110 meters, not at all bulky. However, from the east, the building seems to lose height and rests firmly on its foundation. The colossal main hall seats 2,150 andreflects the architects' main idea with its entire appearance: the desire for involvement and unification. The interior of the hall resembles a huge cave, which was formed under the influence of centuries of influence. The orchestra is "surrounded" by the audience from the stalls, invisible at first glance, and the spectators are located between niches and rock-like ledges. Each of the 10,000 sand-gray plaster panels decorating the interior of the hall is made individually. And since each depression, each hollow has its own shape, the sound is distributed throughout the hall, covering the entire audience. In sanitary areas on parquet floorsThe Scola washbasin by Duravit is installed, creating a successful combination of classic design with modern trends. The Sundeck mini-pool by Duravit acts as a soloist in the spa area of the Westin Hotel Elbphilharmonie, offering peaceful relaxation either before or after an evening concert.
