How to clean up a cluttered garage in 7 days

Well Organized Garage Are you tired ofgarage that looks more like a storage room? Dear readers, if you are ready to transform this tiny (or not so tiny) dump into a useful, well-organized space, then this article is for you. Our plan will help you break down the huge monster of a big deal into simple steps, so that you can easily transform this place and finally start using it again! The garage can be filled not only with car accessories and chemicals for car care: it is usually where things are brought that are in the way at home, but it is a pity to throw them away. Here is how to fix this situation.

Make a plan of attack

Depending on the condition of your garage, youYou will need to do some level of cleaning to move around the space comfortably. Ask for help if necessary. And don’t forget to check the weather forecast before you do anything! You will need to take everything that will interfere with the cleaning outside or inside the house. The first two days will be the hardest part of the job; the rest of the week will be spent putting away the things you decided to keep, only now they will be in designated storage areas rather than on the floor. Read through the entire plan before you start working and make adjustments as needed. Before you start working, take a moment to visualize what you want to achieve, how you want the garage to look in its new light. What will you use it for? Do you need space for a car and a new workshop? Or do you just want some gear, off-season clothing, or equipment? Keep your goals in mind – this will help you stay focused throughout the week.

Day 1. Release

Before you start, create some areas,for example, with large garbage bags or cardboard boxes for hazardous waste, trash, recyclables, things to donate, sell or keep. If necessary, you can rent a large dumpster. But remember that everything unnecessary must be removed from here. And do not rely on "what if I need it"! Once you have the above-mentioned zones, you can start taking everything out of the garage and sorting. Tip: do not try to do this inside - you will not be able to achieve a truly clean and organized place. What to keep:

  • important memorabilia;
  • items that you have used in the past 12 months;
  • things that you are going to use in the near future (for example, exercise equipment that you have forgotten about);
  • spare building materials like paints or tiles.

Classification:

  • holiday decorations;
  • everything for gardening;
  • instruments;
  • all for repair;
  • car care;
  • memorabilia;
  • seasonal goods;
  • sport equipment;
  • different.

Get rid of all the unnecessary things.Thinking that you might use it someday and holding on to it until then is pointless. Every item you keep and don't use is actually taking up precious space that could be occupied by something more valuable. Give it away, sell it, donate it... let it go.Garage Design (California Closets)

Day 2. Cleaning and careful inspection

Because the things that are stored here are fromcar to paint cans, can be very dirty. Sometimes even too dirty. In any case, you will have to wash everything that is left here, treat it from parasites that could have settled, for example, in old coats, and wipe the dust off all the old lamps. The garage itself will also have to be cleaned. And don't be lazy! Today is a day of complete cleaning.

  • Remove everything from the garage if you haven't done it yet.
  • Inspect it for rodents, pests, and water damage. Wear a protective mask if you are sensitive to dust.
  • Loose detergent plentifully pour on the oil stains that remained on the floor covering, and rub with a hard brush with warm water. Rinse and allow to dry.
  • Sweep the floor carefully.
  • If you want to get really cleanthe room, use the hose and the old mop with a brush, rinse everything and wipe off excess water. Allow the garage to dry completely before returning items.

Organize your tasks: While everything is drying inside, visit your piles of things left over from yesterday.

  • Move items out of unsafe boxes andbags into heavy-duty plastic containers. (Another downside to cardboard: Rats and other rodents can easily "chew" their way onto your property to make a nest.)
  • Use small tanks with lids for storing frequently used items.
  • Buy colored labels to identify content.
  • Do not mix! If you started boxing souvenirs from your childhood, do not drop your swimsuit there. So it will be very difficult for you to find what you need.

Day 3. Make a storage plan.

Standing in the garage with a notepad in hand, drawa rough plan of the space. Mark where a certain category would be more convenient, so to speak. As you complete a task for the week, fill in the details of where and what you store. And be sure to keep this plan with you - it will come in handy when you are ready to pull out your decorations for a certain holiday and need to find them.Shelving with containers and wall hooks (One Man And A Hammer)

Day 4. Remove everything from the floor.

Storing things on the garage floor means they're susceptible to mold, water damage, and just plain dirty! If you haven't purchased storage systems yet, now's the time to get one.

  • Use vertical space. How about high shelving and ceiling platforms?
  • Use the walls. If you have two walls with racks, build in the third hooks. Or make simple shelves. Bicycles, tools, shovels, rakes, sports equipment can be hung on the wall, avoiding the terrible cluttering of the floor.

Stack plastic containers (just make sure the label is on the front) on top, and bikes and the like can be stored on hooks underneath the shelf.Another way to organize space (Monkey Bars of Wichita) Put things you rarely use on the very top

  • Top level: children's memorabilia and old documents that need to be stored for a long time.
  • Medium: holiday decorations and seasonal items.
  • Lower: Gardening equipment, home improvement, sports equipment.

Day 5. Completion of work

If you have a pile about the same as in the photoabove, don't get mad or angry. Now is the time to finish the job, so you can move on to more important things… reward yourself with an ice-cold drink!

  • Move what needs to be subjectedrecycling, where things are taken for recycling. You may be surprised, but you can even dispose of old clothes and textiles, hangers for clothes, sneakers and broken appliances.
  • Run to a local charity and make a donation.
  • Arrange a sale in the yard, if you have things that you can sell.

Day 6. Make an entrance

If your garage is attached to your house, you probablyuse this door as your entryway, which means you can create a mini hallway there. Lay down a rug, install a shoe rack, and attach a few coat hooks.Beautiful and well-organized space (Garage Envy)

Day 7 and on. Save your work!

Organize your tasks

  • Stop thinking about the garage as a place to dump garbage! No need to leave here everything that is bad in the house. Better learn to perceive this room as a useful storage place.
  • When you put something new, make sure that this thing belongs to at least one of the categories that you wrote down when you did the cleaning.

Cleaning tasks

  • View oil stains. As soon as you notice at least one, immediately sprinkle it with powder to prevent harmful fumes from entering the house.
  • Keep a container in the garage into which you will collect items for special disposal (for example, engine oil and paint) and empty it when it becomes full.
  • Set the date when you will be general cleaning of the room.
