The owners of the over,under design studio (Boston, Massachusetts, USA) Chris Grimley and his wife Kelly Smith tried their hand at their own apartment when they started their business. They transformed an apartment purchased under the affordable housing program into a spacious apartment for a family of four and two dogs.
Initially, the renovation of the apartment was planned asa long, multi-stage project. But the arrival of the first child sped up the process. Several walls were cut out, all floor coverings were removed, and the floor was painted with garage paint. The kitchen was also radically changed. The result of the work was a spacious, bright apartment in neutral tones with several color accents.
- What is your favorite part of this project?— The kitchen. It was changed just so that it would be convenient for us to use, and it looks more appropriate in the apartment. — — What difficulties did you have to face while working on the apartment? — Finish the renovation before the baby was born! — — How did you come up with the idea of creating a partition out of felt? — This is my and Kelly’s witty invention. We are big fans of Scandinavian design, patterns and geometry. Therefore, the partition was a natural continuation of our taste preferences. Redevelopment for a family The original layout of the apartment had many corners and inconvenient moments, which created a lot of problems for the family to live in. The redevelopment included the creation of several perpendicular partitions that perform a zoning function and serve as the basis for built-in storage systems.
Snow-white kitchen in two lines In order not to loseuseful area, the kitchen had to be radically rebuilt. The old pantry was removed, and a new one was made from the old bedroom wardrobe, a connection between the kitchen and the living room space appeared. Snow-white kitchen furniture was arranged in two parallel lines. The lower part of the kitchen, facing , serves as a place for breakfast and a bar counter.
To complete the global restructuring, the regular full-size refrigerator was replaced with a built-in under-counter refrigerator. This allowed for wall cabinets to be placed along the entire length of the kitchen and to increase the work area.
Built-in storage systems ErectedThe partitions became the basis for a whole range of built-in furniture: wardrobes in the bedroom and living room, linen boxes between the bathroom and the hallway. In addition, they protect the kitchen area from possible accidental views from the front door.
Most of the built-in furniture fronts are equipped withsystem of opening by pressing. This turned out to be a convenient feature while the child in the family was very small. When he grew up, he was able to open and close the doors of his closet independently, take out and put away toys.
Neutral interior color scheme and bright accentsA neutral color scheme was chosen for the apartments. Most of the walls and facades are painted white. Only in a few places are functional zones highlighted with a solid color: the dining area and the storage system in the children's room. All these surfaces serve as a wonderful background for the furniture collection, the authors of which are also the creators of the project.
