Removal of old varnish and painting

You will need:

  • sandpaper (grinding machine);
  • nailing;
  • priming on wood;
  • acrylic paint;
  • roller and brush.

The process of decorating a chair.It is necessary to start with preparatory work. First, remove the upholstery, this must be done carefully so as not to damage the surface. Then, using a nail puller or pliers, get rid of the nails. After that, proceed to removing the old varnish, this can be done in several ways: using a grinding machine, sandpaper, broken glass. At home, the easiest way is to use sandpaper with a medium grain, which must be moistened, then go over the surface in a circular motion several times. This way, the old varnish will soften and come off. Finish sanding with fine-grained sandpaper. To make the work easier, wrap the sandpaper around a block. After you have gotten rid of the varnish, you need to prime the surface of the old chair. It is best to use a special primer for wood. Then you can start painting. Acrylic paint has a number of advantages over other paint coatings: it is odorless, dries quickly, and is resistant to mechanical damage. Therefore, it is better to use acrylic for painting an old chair.To decorate a chair in a classic style,you need to paint the legs dark and make the upholstery scarlet. A classic style chair can be painted black with red and brown shades. Provencal, Mediterranean, country styles are suitable for light-colored furniture: gray, milky, light blue or green, as well as purple. The easiest way to apply paint is with a wide soft brush (flat brush) with synthetic bristles; a roller can be used to paint a wide surface. After you have applied the first coat of paint, you need to let it dry thoroughly, then sand the surface with fine-grained sandpaper. Apply 2 to 4 coats of paint in a similar manner. How to age the surface of the chair?

You will need:Croqueling is a technique for aging a surface.

  • paraffin candle;
  • acrylic paints;
  • sandpaper;
  • one-step craquelure;
  • antique patina.

If you want to decorate a chair or an old onea stool in the Provencal style, then in this case you cannot do without such a technique as aging. In order to make scuffs, it is necessary to apply dark brown, black or gray-green paint in certain places, let it dry. Then you need to rub this place with a paraffin candle and paint with paint of a contrasting color, for example, white or blue. Then take sandpaper and go over these places. This removes the top layer of paint, after which scuffs appear, which give the chair a touch of antiquity. You can age a chair using a one-step craquelure (sold in handicraft departments). First, you need to decide on the place where the cracks will be. Then paint the surface in a dark color, after the paint dries, apply a layer of one-step craquelure. Immediately apply paint of a contrasting color, while strokes are made only in one direction. You can't go back to the painted area, as you can paint over the cracks - then the craquelure won't work. The shape of the cracks will depend on the direction of the brush. You can apply strokes horizontally or vertically. An interesting craquelure is obtained if you make strokes in the form of a semicircle or alternate the direction of the brush. You can achieve the effect of aging with the help of antique patina, it is used to tint convex places, depressions of the ornament, and darken the edges of the surface. Patina is applied with a foam sponge, left for 5-10 minutes, then the excess is removed with a damp cloth. Patina can be replaced with acrylic paints, so a mixture of burnt umber and black shade successfully imitates antique bitumen. Green and blue shades can be used to age the metal fittings of the chair. Return to the table of contents</a>

Decoration of chairs

You will need:For decoupage technique you need to choose a suitable design.

  • paper napkins with an interesting pattern;
  • fan brush;
  • PVA glue;
  • stencil;
  • putty on wood;
  • acrylic lacquer;
  • acrylic paints.

The chair can be decorated using decoupage technique.To do this, you need to buy napkins with a suitable pattern. These can be plant motifs, a monochrome pattern or plot drawings, it all depends on your imagination. First, you need to remove the 2 bottom white layers from the napkin, then separate the motif. Never cut out the pattern with scissors, otherwise the cuts will be visible on the finished product. The motif is either torn out with your fingers, stepping back about 1 cm from the pattern, or take a thin brush, dip it in water, draw along the tear line, then carefully tear off the pattern.Chairs can be decorated to create an ornamentmosaic. The napkin is applied to the surface of the chair (front side up), PVA glue is poured in the center, then the motif is glued using a fan brush, moving in a circular motion from the center to the edges. It is important not to press too hard, otherwise the napkin will tear. You can do it a little differently: use salted water instead of glue, then wait 2-3 minutes, and then apply PVA. Thus, the napkin is first glued with water, then fixed with glue. Next, the napkin motif is covered with acrylic varnish, and the edges of the pattern are sanded with sandpaper. This is necessary in order to smooth out the transition between the napkin and the surface of the chair unnoticeably. Then, shadows and missing details are painted with acrylic paints (in case of a motif break). If you get a lot of folds when gluing the napkin, it is not a problem. The pattern is covered with 3 layers of varnish with intermediate drying, after which the surface is sanded with damp fine-grain sandpaper. Varnish and sand again, repeating the process until the folds disappear. Interesting decor can be achieved using putty and a stencil. After you have primed the chair, attach the stencil using masking tape. Then take a spatula and apply the putty. Remove the stencil and rinse it with water. After the putty dries, it must be painted the same color as the entire chair. Then you need to shade the edges using antique patina or acrylic paint. First, apply a dark color to the entire surface of the ornament, after about 5 minutes, remove the excess with a damp cloth. Lightly go over the convex areas with gold or silver paint (patina). You can decorate the chair using a contour for glass and ceramics (sold in handicraft departments and art stores). The easiest way is to make a colored dotted pattern in an African style. First, apply the pattern using carbon paper, then take the outline and squeeze out the dots. It is important to press evenly on the tube, then the fragments of the pattern will be the same size. The outline dries within 24 hours, after which you can correct the drawing with a blade or a sharp knife. The decorated chair must be covered with durable acrylic or automotive aerosol varnish. You can use special furniture wax. It is applied in thin layers (with intermediate drying) using a rag. It is quite possible to decorate an old chair yourself if you use your imagination and follow the advice given above.
